MacKay Sposito was hired through a joint partnership with Metro Parks Tacoma and the City of Tacoma to master plan and renovate an existing 0.2-acre neighborhood park. The site was historically a corner gas station prior to it being redeveloped into a small park for an underserved community offering a small playground, half-court basketball, minimal site furnishings, perimeter fencing, and small open space. Having fallen into a state of disrepair, it presented an ideal opportunity for a facelift.
Single-family residential homes surround the park along two property boundaries, which require buffering and privacy considerations. Through a thoughtful master planning process, including a thorough inventory and analysis, public engagement, and creative design solutions that responded to the site opportunities and constraints, we gained consensus on a preferred master plan to guide the park's development. The resultant design provided much-needed amenities such as accessible and inclusive playgrounds, shelters, site furnishings, walking paths, and sustainable landscape plantings in a cohesive manner while supporting a theme to celebrate the site’s namesake and history as a neighborhood gas station.
